A deceptively simple premise fuels Cut the Rope: deliver candy to a hungry monster. The core loop revolves around precise timing and physics-based interactions, as you slice ropes, manipulate platforms, and use environmental elements to solve each level's challenges. Its bite-sized levels, charming presentation, and steady drip-feed of new mechanics create a compelling experience that's easy to pick up but difficult to master, leading to countless replays.

About Cut the Rope

Details
Cut the Rope is a series of physics-based puzzle video games developed by ZeptoLab for several platforms and devices. The objective of the Cut the Rope games is to feed candy to a little green creature named Om Nom while collecting stars. In each level, the candy hangs by one or several of the titular ropes which the player must cut with a swipe of their finger using the device's touchscreen. Using various objects such as floating bubbles and bellows, the candy must also be manipulated around obstacles to get to Om Nom's mouth. Each level pack introduces new challenges. Levels are scored with a zero to three star rating, according to how many stars the player picked up, and a point score depending on the number of stars collected and the amount of time taken to complete the level. Game received multiple award, for example: Apple Design Award 2011, British Academy Video Games Awards 2011 and many others.

Human: Fall Flat

2016 · Platform

Like Cut the Rope, this game challenges your spatial reasoning and understanding of physics, but instead of feeding candy to a monster, you're a wobbly human navigating surreal, floating landscapes.

Why recommended

  • Core gameplay revolves around manipulating objects and physics in creative ways to solve environmental challenges, similar to the precise rope cutting and candy swinging of the source game.
  • Criteria — Features numerous puzzles that require strategic thinking and often lead to 'aha!' moments through trial and error, fitting the 'Puzzle' and 'Strategy' criteria.
  • The 'Challenging Difficulty' comes from the often-unpredictable physics and the need for precise, sometimes awkward, character control to navigate obstacles and solve intricate level designs.

Instead of cutting ropes, you're deforming the world itself to navigate and solve puzzles. It shares Cut the Rope's focus on precise timing and spatial manipulation within a charming, minimalist aesthetic.

Why recommended

  • Features a unique platform-bending mechanic that acts as the central puzzle-solving tool, requiring players to strategically deform the environment to create paths or solve obstacles.
  • Criteria — The entire game is built around clever puzzle design that demands both quick reflexes and strategic planning to deform platforms effectively and reach objectives.
  • The 'Challenging Difficulty' arises from increasingly complex level layouts and the need for precise timing and understanding of how world deformation impacts movement and object interaction.

While more narrative-driven, Pikuniku offers a similar blend of physics-based puzzle-solving and charming, whimsical design, where environmental interaction is key to progression.

Why recommended

  • Employs physics-based interactions for many of its puzzles, where players must manipulate objects, use momentum, and interact with the environment in often humorous ways.
  • Criteria — Presents a variety of environmental puzzles that require strategic thinking to overcome, often involving creative use of the character's unique movement and interactions.
  • The 'Challenging Difficulty' comes from some of the more intricate platforming and puzzle sequences that demand precise timing and understanding of the game's quirky physics.
