Higurashi When They Cry Hou: Ch.1 Onikakushi

2015
AdventureVisual Novel

Horror · Mystery

This visual novel's true genius lies in how it weaponizes repetition and unreliable narration. Higurashi lulls you into a false sense of security with its cutesy art style and slice-of-life setup, only to shatter that facade with each chapter's descent into psychological horror. The story's structure, where the same events are replayed from different perspectives, slowly reveals the mysteries of Hinamizawa village, making the player piece together the truth alongside the increasingly paranoid cast.
