Branching Story · Metroidvania · Open World · Sci-Fi

Metroid's lonely exploration of an alien world, backed by a haunting atmosphere, set a template. Its non-linear structure and emphasis on player discovery, rather than hand-holding, were revolutionary. The feeling of unlocking new abilities, which then opened up previously inaccessible areas, created a satisfying feedback loop that still resonates.
