ShooterMusicAdventureArcade
A sensory experience unlike anything else, it's a rail shooter that fuses gameplay with a pulsating electronic soundtrack. Each enemy destroyed triggers a beat, building layers of sound as you progress through abstract, wireframe environments. The game encourages repeated playthroughs to chase higher scores and unlock more of its hypnotic music, making for a truly synesthetic journey.

About Rez Infinite

Details
The world of Rez is set in the near future on a massively overpopulated Earth with society crippled by crime rates, and on the verge of meltdown. In an attempt to resolve the chaos, a new global network was created: Project-K, overseen by a self-aware artificial intelligence named Eden. However, the increasing information flow and infection by a virus (the main character) confused Eden, allowing her to begin questioning the meaning of its existence and the consequences of her actions. Trying to fathom the paradoxes that surrounded her and realizing the power she possessed, she shut herself down. The player character and protagonist is a hacker virus unofficially named Swayzak, traversing the Project-K network on a mission to re-awaken Eden and to reveal the true being at her core by progressing deeper through the system, and destroying the other viruses, anti-viruses, security programs, defense systems, and firewalls within.

Like Rez Infinite, Thumper is a rhythm-action game that pushes you into a trance-like state, but where Rez is about elegant targeting, Thumper is a brutal, percussive assault on your senses, demanding perfect timing and quick reflexes.

Why recommended

  • Core gameplay is a 'rhythm violence' experience where every action is tied to the beat, creating an intense, synesthetic feedback loop similar to Rez Infinite's musical interaction.
  • Criteria — Action is central, requiring precise inputs and quick reactions to navigate the track and defeat bosses, while the difficulty is relentlessly challenging, punishing even minor mistakes.
  • The abstract, dark aesthetic and relentless pace create a hypnotic, almost overwhelming atmosphere, drawing players into a tunnel-vision focus akin to Rez's on-rails journey through cyberspace.

Trade Rez's digital landscapes for a neon-drenched pop album come to life. Sayonara Wild Hearts offers a similar on-rails, rhythm-driven action experience, but with a vibrant, arcade-like energy and a strong narrative through its musical journey.

Why recommended

  • Features fast-paced, on-rails gameplay where movement and actions are synchronized with a dynamic pop soundtrack, offering a similar flow state to Rez Infinite.
  • Criteria — Action is constant, requiring quick reflexes to dodge obstacles and collect items, and while not overtly 'difficult' in a traditional sense, achieving high scores and perfect runs provides a significant challenge.
  • The game's abstract, dreamlike aesthetic and narrative progression through musical stages echo Rez's journey through digital layers, creating a cohesive and immersive audiovisual experience.

While Tetris Effect might seem like a departure from Rez's shooting, it shares the same visionary creator and a profound commitment to synesthesia. It transforms the classic puzzle game into a mesmerizing, rhythm-infused experience that's both challenging and deeply meditative.

Why recommended

  • Developed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Enhance Games, it shares Rez Infinite's philosophy of synesthetic gameplay where every action (rotating, dropping blocks) triggers visual and auditory effects that build into a larger musical composition.
  • Criteria — The core gameplay is Puzzle, but the 'Zone' mechanic and increasing speed demand quick, action-oriented decision-making, and mastering higher difficulties presents a significant Challenge.
  • The game's abstract, evolving environments and responsive sound design create a deeply immersive and almost transcendental experience, drawing players into a flow state akin to Rez's hypnotic rhythm.
